Our Educational Series aims to provide readers with information about new topics or areas of discussion in areas related to interpersonal violence, human trafficking, healing, etc. Part of our mission is to continue educating ourselves and our readers so that we may all be better informed. We encourage our readers to recommend topics that they’re interested in and would like people to know more about.

Consent – Learn more about what consent is, how you can establish consent, how to practice consent, and why consent is important. Watch two videos: one that explains consent as it could be related to offering someone tea and another that shows how to navigate consent. Remember: Consent is like boxing. If both people do not agree to it, then one person is committing a crime.

Healthy Relationships – Read about what factors help foster healthy relationships and signs of healthy relationships in both heterosexual and LGBTQ+ relationships. Check out the National Domestic Violence Hotline’s Relationship Spectrum, and learn about One Love and how to take action with them to promote healthy relationships!

Interpersonal Violence – Find out more about interpersonal violence generally and some of the specific types, including Intimate Partner ViolenceSexual Violence, Human Trafficking, and Sexual Harassment. You can inspect the power and control wheel to see the different tactics abusers can use, and then, check out the equality wheel that shows what a healthy relationship looks like when partners are equals. Study the cycle of violence in abusive relationships (tension building, acute explosion, and honeymoon phases) and remember that the length of time it takes to go through the cycle is dependent on the specific abusive relationship.

Self-Care – Read about what self-care is, why you should practice self-care, and how you can practice self-care. Consider different ways to practice self-care and assess the self-care wheel before creating your own personalized self-care wheel! Take the Self-Care Assessment to see how you’re doing and how you can improve upon your self-care habits!

Trauma Triggers: The Brain Science of Trauma and Healing – Learn about how trauma impacts the brain, what a “trauma trigger” is, and what it all means for healing. Understanding the “why” can make our healing journeys easier.

Empowerment Self-Defense – Discover a new type of self-defense training which, in essence, is a variation of martial arts. ESD includes a holistic set of skills that individuals can use day-to-day (from the most “minor” affront to a major attack).
